FOCUSED

I am a results oriented person who looks to find a solution rather than dwelling on the problem. It is this focus which birthed this campaign and that will aid in resolving the matters brought before me as Judge.

FAIR

I have always prided myself on being fair and following the path which the evidence laid out. As a Judge, I will continue to require all parties to comport with the law and deliver contemplative rulings without partiality or bias.

FOR THE PEOPLE

I believe it is important to hold people accountable for their actions, but I also believe that an individual is not the sum total of their mistakes. As Judge, I will offer a balanced approach to resolving matters aimed at both accountability and rehabilitation.

New Day New Perspective

As a community member who has had the privilege to prosecute cases in Nash, Edgecombe, and Wilson counties for over 13 years, I believe it is time for something NEW!

I am a seasoned attorney who understands the importance of upholding the Constitution and applying the law to the facts of each case. I also understand the need for transparency, honesty and access to the courts in an effort to restore faith in our justice system.

Meet the Candidate

Alicia Slaughter is a Florida native who has made North Carolina her second home. Alicia resides in Nashville with her husband of 14 years, Jason Slaughter and their two daughters. After graduating from the University of South Florida where she majored in Accounting in 2006, she immediately moved to North Carolina and began pursuing her law degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Upon graduating in 2009, Alicia joined the Racial Justice Act as a staff attorney and traveled the state researching death penalty cases and collecting data to assess whether racial bias impacted the administration of justice. In 2010, Alicia joined what was then the Seventh Prosecutorial District as an Assistant District Attorney (ADA), serving Nash, Edgecombe and Wilson counties. As an ADA, Alicia had the opportunity to serve in District Court in all three counties. Alicia was later assigned to Nash County where she ultimately became the Chief Assistant District Attorney. As Chief, Alicia continued to foster a working relationship with the public, attorneys and law enforcement. Alicia seeks to continue her service to the community as your next District Court Judge.

My Roots

I am the proud daughter of Anthony “Tony” McClendon and Carla McClendon. Although they divorced while I was in grade school, both of my parents instilled in me the value of hard work, treating others with respect, and the importance of education. As a first generation college student, my parents prayed, cheered and provided unwavering support during my journey to accomplish my dream of becoming an attorney. My parents showed me that despite where you start, success can be achieved with grit and determination. I am thankful for their love, guidance and support and I realize that it is upon their shoulders I stand.

Called To Serve

As a prosecutor Alicia worked to ensure that the stakeholders within the justice system were fair and accountable. Alicia served as a member on the Eighth District’s Giglio Committee where she routinely reviewed the actions of law enforcement to determine if reported actions amounted to violations which called into question a police officer's credibility. Understanding that knowledge is power, Alicia also worked with prospective law enforcement officers while in Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) in a mock trial setting to help educate them on lawful procedure for criminal stops and investigations.

Alicia also served as a member of the Multidisciplinary Team for crimes against children where she collaborated with law enforcement and other agencies to monitor case progress and help children receive resources necessary to deal with trauma.

Alicia currently serves as a member of the Violent Crime Action Plan Task Force where she works closely with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and federal prosecutors to identify and prosecute the most dangerous criminal offenders in our community.

Additionally, Alicia has partnered with other community based service organizations to impact the community including Meals on Wheels, Nash County Democratic Women, Teen Court, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
